Carlsberg II / Rheinland-Pfalz

We reforested two fallow areas in the Gerolsheim Forest—in the municipality of Frankenstein, near Carlsberg—in three phases.

This area shows a mixed pattern of growth. While the left side has a failure rate of about 20%, nearly all the seedlings on the right have taken root. This is all the more surprising given that the entire area faces west. Some rowan and linden trees have already grown to a height of 3 meters. Overall, however, we still have a very good survival rate of 90%.

In our two reforestation projects, Carlsberg I and Carlsberg II, we can clearly see how important soil quality is for the growth of our seedlings. We’ve seen very high survival rates on both sites, but the seedlings are developing much more slowly compared to many other projects. Nevertheless, we’re pleased to have seen that most of the seedlings—ranging in height from 80 cm to 200 cm—are healthy and robust. We’ll certainly continue to monitor both sites for a few more years to track their further development.

On September 11, 2024, despite steady rain, our team was able to see for themselves the excellent growth rate on our site in Carlsberg. With the support of the dedicated forester, the team spent two hours inspecting all the areas we have reforested in the region. Everyone involved is very satisfied with the results and looks forward to continuing our close and trusting collaboration.

In mid-March, we were able to complete “Carlsberg II.” As with our “Carlsberg I” project, this wonderful reforestation project was made possible by an American company with a production facility in the area. Once again, we were able to reforest over one hectare of cleared land in this region. Many thanks to foresters Isabelle and Christian, as well as to all the volunteers and supporters. By planting beech, oak, chestnut, cherry, and larch trees, we’ve brought tremendous diversity to the area.

To kick off 2024, we shortened our winter hiatus and launched our first reforestation project of the year on January 13, 2024. A group of very brave volunteers braved the freezing temperatures and planted the first 200 trees of the year in the slightly frozen ground. This group meets every year to reforest together and works with true professionalism. We were already able to count on these hardworking volunteers during the Carlsberg I project.

As was the case in the spring of 2023, many volunteers will gather on January 13, 2024, for a community reforestation day on these large areas of fallow land. The reforestation is being made possible by an American company with a production facility in a nearby major city. The American parent company has donated 2,800 trees for this project.
