Oberried I / Baden-Württemberg – BERGGEHEIMNIS-Wald

East of Freiburg, we are reforesting a private forest above the Weilersbach Valley. The area in question is a damaged site along the Weilersbach–Hinterwaldkopf hiking trail, covering approximately 1 ha.

This project is supported by Berggeheimnis as the main sponsor and is carried out through joint reforestation projects.

Although we were very satisfied with how this area developed during the first two years, we unfortunately noticed some damage from browsing and trampling in the fall of 2024. While the chestnut trees were able to thrive quite well, the maple and cherry trees were quite badly damaged.
In the spring of 2025, our team and the forest owner joined forces to replant and protect the area. Now the area should soon look the way it was intended from the start.
As you can see, we stay the course, even when things don’t go exactly as planned. We care for each area until we’re confident enough to leave it to fend for itself.

Two years after the first planting and one and a half years after the second planting in Oberried, we visited the Berggeheimnis Forest. The seedlings from both plantings are thriving. In particular, the conifers—which usually cause us some concern from time to time—are thriving exceptionally well in this area.
The deciduous trees have now grown to 150–180 cm.

We managed to visit the Berggeheimniswald just in time before winter and are glad to see that 80–90% of the seedlings have taken root. Despite yet another summer that was far too dry, this is a very encouraging result. The little plants have really given it their all and some have grown as tall as 80 cm.

A Successful Second Day of Reforestation

With the active support of many volunteers, both big and small, another section of sustainable mixed forest was planted on Saturday in the Berggeheimnis Forest. So far, we have planted 480 Douglas firs, 600 Norway maples, 600 sweet chestnuts, and 700 cherry trees. The Berggeheimnis team can be proud of itself: it has planted a total of 2,380 trees! Many thanks to all the volunteers and to forester Tobias Koschka!

Our Second Day of Reforestation

Now that the frost season is over, it’s time for the next reforestation day in our “Mountain Mystery” Forest. Following the successful project day in November, we’re looking forward to welcoming many hardworking volunteers of all ages again on March 19, 2022. The deciduous trees were planted in November, and now we’ll be supplementing the area on the steep slope with conifers.

Our first reforestation day!

On November 20, 2021, we kicked off our first reforestation day with about 30 people, including 14 children and teenagers. Despite the fog—which later gave way to bright sunshine—we were able to plant over 1,000 trees in about 4 hours. After a brief technical introduction by forester Tobias Koschka, he and forest owner Gregor Fressle guided our group through the planting process. Everyone involved had a great time working in nature and riding the tractor to the reforestation site. Thanks to everyone’s highly motivated efforts, we were able to plant two-thirds of the deciduous trees—achieving much more than we had anticipated. The remaining third of the deciduous trees will be planted on the weekend of November 27, 2021, and the Douglas firs will be planted in the spring.

Badische Zeitung reported 25.11.2021.

On October 11, 2021, a meeting was held to discuss the details of the reforestation project, which is set to begin soon. In addition to the forest owner, the responsible forester, Mr. Tobias Koschka, was on site and supported us with his extensive expertise. The tree species have now been selected, and we will be reforesting a sustainable mixed forest consisting of 66% deciduous trees and 33% conifers.

Inspection of the damaged area in Oberried with forest owner Gregor. Originally a pure spruce stand, it has suffered massive damage following the dry summers, the bark beetle infestation, and last year’s storms. We will plant a new mixed forest on the resulting fallow land. The area is supported by “Berggeheimnis” in Kirchzarten and will be planted as part of joint reforestation projects.
